Increase of Social Media Users in Latin America

An estimated 25% of the world is an active user on social media. In fact, according to the social media agency, We Are Social, within the span of one year, online users have increased by 25% in North America, and 114% in Latin America.

In January, 2014, MediaBistro conducted a study of the most important social media websites : Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkedin, Instagram, and Google+. The study showed the number of active users, with Facebook coming in at first place with 1 billion users. Instagram came in 5th with approximately 150 million users, followed by Pinterest with 70 million users. In fact, analysts predict that over the course of the next three years, there will be a massive growth of social network users, and that by 2017, there will be an estimated 181 million users in North America, and 216 million users in Latin America.

These numbers come across as no surprise, since social media users around the globe rose 18% in 2013. More specifically, just alone in Mexico, 98% of the population that owns a mobile phone has a Facebook account, while 28% has an Instagram account. As well, the average Mexican spends 5 hours and 22 minutes daily surfing the internet, while on their mobile phone, they spend 3 hours and 10 minutes on the web.

These numbers show why companies have been turning towards social media to promote their brand and products. We live in a world that’s becoming very web-savvy, and whoever stays behind, is missing the opportunity to grow. Social media tools like Facebook and Instagram have allowed users and brands around the world to connect, and today, these social mediums are among the top 10 most popular.
